FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
What is SourceX?
SourceX helps companies turn selected business records into licensed datasets for AI. We build and manage the infrastructure that enables businesses to license proprietary business data to AI developers—from sourcing and qualification to rights review, contracting, data preparation, delivery, and payment. Businesses gain a managed path to monetize their data. AI developers gain access to enterprise data with defined rights, permitted uses, and delivery requirements.
Do you only work with US companies?
No. U.S. companies are our priority, and we also work with companies in Canada and the EU. Companies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Latin America, the UAE and Saudi Arabia can qualify when at least 90% of their data is in English. Buyers are AI labs, model developers and research teams around the world.
Why would AI companies want business data?
Public internet data has limits. Many AI capabilities need real examples of how specialized work gets done — decisions, workflows, and expert judgment that rarely appear online.
What kinds of data are valuable?
Data that is hard to reproduce, captures expert knowledge or multi-step workflows, is reasonably organized, and that you have the rights to license. See the “What data is valuable” page for examples by industry.
Does applying commit us to selling data?
No. Applying and the fit check create no obligation. Nothing is licensed until you approve a specific offer and sign an agreement.
Who owns our data?
You keep ownership of your original licensed data — deals are licenses, not sales of your originals. Under the signed agreement SourceX owns the deidentified dataset built from it, subject to your underlying IP rights. The agreement defines what SourceX and the buyer may each do with it.
Does owning our data mean we can license all of it?
Not always. Owning your records doesn't automatically give you the right to license personal information or data that belongs to customers, vendors or other third parties. We check permissions with you before any deal.
How are licensing rights determined?
We ask structured questions about where data came from and what contracts or policies apply. We don't give legal advice — for anything uncertain, you should involve your own counsel before a deal proceeds.
Can we control how the data is used?
You control what's in scope. Once licensed, buyers can use the data, with personal details removed, to build and improve AI models and products, including through their customers. Everything is spelled out in the agreement you approve before signing.
What happens if the data contains personal information?
Flag it before sharing a sample. Depending on the data and law, you may need to remove it or exclude those records entirely. You can prepare the data yourself, or SourceX can arrange preparation through a vetted partner as a paid service once a deal is agreed.
Does SourceX guarantee a buyer?
No. Submitting a profile doesn't guarantee interest, an offer, or payment. We'll tell you honestly if we don't see demand.
How is data valued?
After the fit check you'll see an estimated licensing payout based on company size (for example $30K–$180K for 50–99 employees). After your data inventory and buyer evaluation, we present your actual licensing offer to accept, counter or decline.
What does SourceX actually manage?
The business side of data licensing: finding and qualifying business data owners, checking licensing permissions, agreeing price and allowed uses, coordinating the transaction and payment, and handling future purchases. Tools for ongoing purchases are being developed.
How does SourceX make money?
SourceX manages the transaction and is compensated as part of each completed deal. We don't publish our commercial terms; every offer you receive shows your actual licensing payout before you sign anything.
How long does the process take?
It varies. Review usually takes days; finding a buyer and agreeing terms can take weeks or months depending on demand and complexity.
Is licensing exclusive?
Deals carry an exclusivity term, and it restricts you rather than SourceX: during that term you agree not to license the same data to anyone else for AI training. SourceX keeps the right to distribute or sublicense the deidentified dataset, including to more than one buyer. You see the term before you sign, and any other structure is agreed per deal.
Can we license data more than once?
During the exclusivity term you agree not to license the same data elsewhere for AI training. That restriction is on you, not on SourceX, whose right to distribute or sublicense the deidentified dataset is set out in the signed agreement. Different datasets can fit different buyers.
Is my company too small?
What matters is size or uniqueness. We usually work with companies that had 50+ full-time employees at their peak — but a smaller company with truly one-of-a-kind data can still be a strong fit. If in doubt, run the fit check and we'll tell you honestly.
Who is SourceX a fit for?
Best suited to companies with 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded) and several years of operating history. Companies that are still operating, acquired, or wound down can all qualify.
Can we reject an offer?
Always. You can decline any offer, ask questions, or request different terms. Nothing proceeds without your approval.
Do we need technical staff?
Not to get started. Describing your data takes about 10 minutes. Preparing a delivery may need someone who can export files from your systems.
How is the data transferred?
After an agreement is executed, you upload the approved scope to private storage, and buyer access is authorized explicitly. Files are never public.
Can buyers request custom datasets?
Yes. Buyers submit specifications and we look for businesses whose data fits.
Can companies outside the US participate?
Yes. We work with companies in Canada and the EU, and with companies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Latin America, the UAE and Saudi Arabia when at least 90% of their data is in English. Privacy and data-transfer rules vary by country, so tell us where your data comes from and we'll flag anything that needs extra review.
Can I back out?
Yes. Until you approve final terms and an agreement is executed, you can withdraw at any point. Once SourceX has selected the data in writing and paid the fee, its license is permanent.
Can I request deletion after delivery?
Data SourceX doesn't select within the 30-day review period is deemed declined and destroyed, subject to standard retention and applicable law. Once data is selected and the fee is paid, the license is permanent, and neither SourceX nor its customers are required to untrain, delete or stop operating models already built from it.
How am I paid?
Payment timing and conditions are set by your signed transaction agreement. Under the current supplier agreement, SourceX’s written selection permits an invoice; payment is due Net 60 from SourceX’s receipt of it, without a buyer-payment condition. Unselected submissions earn no payment.
What tax forms are involved?
US sellers typically provide a W-9, and 1099 reporting may apply. Non-US sellers typically provide a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E. This isn't tax advice — please check with your advisor.
Can non-English datasets qualify?
Yes, for companies in the U.S., Canada and the EU: multilingual and non-English data can be valuable, so tell us the languages involved. Companies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Latin America, the UAE and Saudi Arabia need at least 90% of their data in English.
Do we have to sell our entire database?
No. You choose what's in scope. That said, the most valuable packages cover many systems — email, documents, messaging and business records over several years.
Do we lose ownership?
You retain ownership of your original licensed data. Under the signed agreement, SourceX owns the deidentified dataset, subject to your underlying intellectual property rights.
Can I work with other brokers at the same time?
We ask for an exclusive mandate while we present your data, so buyers get a clean, credible offer.
Do I need to export the data myself?
We guide your team through exports. Being ready to export quickly makes your dataset much more attractive to buyers.
How do referrals work?
Earn 25% of the compensation SourceX actually pays the company you refer, up to $100,000 total per company, subject to eligibility and payment conditions. The reward is paid separately by SourceX and never reduces the company's payout. Full terms and your referral link are at refer.sourcex.si/register.
