Does xAI buy business data?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
There is no public reporting of xAI (maker of Grok) signing content or business-data licensing deals comparable to OpenAI's or Google's. Instead, xAI has gone to court to avoid disclosing details about its training data: it sued California's attorney general in December 2025 to block a state law requiring AI developers to publish summaries of their training datasets, arguing the law would expose trade secrets, and later filed a similar suit against Colorado.
No confirmed licensing deals found#
A search of major deal trackers, including CB Insights and news coverage of AI content licensing, did not surface a confirmed xAI publisher or content licensing deal of the kind documented for OpenAI, Google, Microsoft or Amazon.
Fighting data transparency laws instead#
Bloomberg Law and Goodwin's legal analysis reported xAI sued California Attorney General Rob Bonta in December 2025 over the state's Generative AI Training Data Transparency Act (AB 2013), which requires AI developers to publicly summarize their training datasets.
xAI's complaint argued its training datasets are valuable trade secrets and that forced disclosure would hand competitors a roadmap to its methods; a district court denied its request for a preliminary injunction, and IAPP reported xAI filed a similar suit against Colorado's attorney general in April 2026.

What this means for a business#
xAI's legal posture suggests it treats the sourcing of its training data as confidential and contested rather than as a documented licensing program a business could approach.
A U.S. company considering any relationship with an AI company, xAI or otherwise, should ask directly whether a prospective deal includes a written description of use and retention, since xAI's own litigation shows even large AI companies resist disclosing these details voluntarily.
