Question
Structured vs unstructured AI training data
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
Structured data is organised in defined fields — tables, transactions, CRM records. Unstructured data has no fixed schema — emails, documents, chats, audio, images and video. Language and multimodal models rely heavily on unstructured data, which also carries more privacy risk because personal details can appear anywhere in the text. Structured data is easier to de-identify and validate but conveys less context.
Part of: AI training data
Comparison#
| Structured | Unstructured | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Tables, fields | Text, audio, images, video |
| Context | Limited | Rich |
| De-identification | Simpler | Harder |
| Common AI use | Forecasting, classification | Language and multimodal models |
Explanation#
Many valuable datasets combine both, such as a support ticket's text (unstructured) with its category and resolution time (structured).
Rights and privacy#
- Unstructured: requires free-text redaction
- Structured: field-level removal is simpler
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
