Question
Data licensing vs data selling: what's the difference?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
Data licensing grants a buyer specific, limited rights to use data — for a defined purpose, period and scope — while the owner keeps it. Data selling transfers the data outright, usually with few restrictions on later use. Licensing is the norm for AI deals because it lets owners control use, require deletion, prevent resale and license again to other buyers.
Part of: Data licensing
Comparison#
| Licensing | Selling | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Retained | Transferred |
| Use limits | Defined in licence | Few or none |
| Deletion | Can be required | Rarely |
| Relicensing | Possible (non-exclusive) | Not possible |
Rights and privacy#
- Licensing: owner retains control and can audit
- Selling: buyer gains broad rights
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
