Question
Should companies sell or license their data?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
Most companies should license rather than sell. A license grants defined rights — for example, to train or evaluate a model for a set period — while the company keeps ownership and can restrict resale and require deletion. An outright sale transfers the asset permanently. Licensing preserves future revenue, keeps control over how data is used and makes it easier to meet privacy and confidentiality obligations.
Part of: Data licensing
Explanation#
Non-exclusive licenses allow the same dataset to be licensed to several buyers; exclusive licenses usually pay more but limit future deals.
Outright sales are rare for operational business data because it is tied to the business's own confidentiality duties.
Examples#
- Non-exclusive training license for 3 years
- Exclusive evaluation license limited to one product line
Rights and privacy#
- Define permitted and prohibited uses
- Set duration and deletion obligations
- Restrict sublicensing and resale
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
